Good morning, blogging world. I don't have the luxury now to blog daily; because today is a free day, I awoke early before Sophie so I could get in a post......she just woke up and is between us!! LOL Oh, well! I love having her near; although, she is not showing me any affection on her own yet.
Joy, our tour guide who is w/ us every day, says that Sophie's shunning is very normal.
sophie brrrrrrother, sister, bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
She just typed this above....cool.
We are making progress. She will allow me to help her w daily needs~ brushing teeth, bathing ( she loves when I put lotion on her~ yeah!), getting dressed, public potty needs and eating. The rest of the fam has been great about making sure that I care for her in these specific ways. It would be easy for them to do it, but they always defer to me and I'm grateful. She's even coming to ask me for food and not hoarding anything at all!!! That's such an evidence of grace!
I thought we had made some head way at the pool, but after the 2nd day, she wouldn't come to me. I decided that w/a potentially dangerous situation, I wouldn't make the pool a battle ground. Last night, she played w/ Ellie and Shane in the water; I asked her if she would jump to me one time and she agreed.....progress!
As I was saying above, Joy has seen this a lot. She said it could take many months~ but she said it will happen. I'm thankful that she has bonded like glue to Todd, Ellie, and Shane b/c when we get home Todd goes to work on Monday and the kids get into the school grind, she and I will become well acquainted! She encouraged me to keep "make friends" ( there's no verb conjugation in the Chinese language)~ it's fun to be the one to give candy, ice-cream and great snacks. (She loves packaged dried, shredded fish! You go girl!)
She does much better w/ me in the room in the evenings after the kids leave. So we've cut our family times a little short so she and I can have some time before bed. ( We're together all day, every day so it's no biggie for the kids!)
We've been doing nails, stickers, drawing and last night she taught me to count to ten in Chinese. It was sooo cute; tonight I'd like Todd to video tape it while she's unaware. If she knows I'm in a picture or video tape, she completely shuts down. She also won't take a pic w/ me individually; all the family pics you see, the four of them get posed, then I jump in the end so she'll smile....
Yesterday, I introduced her to Satsuma lotion~ she LOVED it and I caught her sneaking it in the bathroom last night. Todd will have to buy stock in The Body Shop.
She's had quite a few tumbles, but after each laughs when others would cry. No one has ever made a big deal about boo-boos w/ her. When she hurt her knee, I put a Dora the Explorer band-aid on her and she even let me give mommy kisses. The next day, when we were all playing an intense game of balloon toss, Shane accidentally elbowed my knee really hard; I went thru the roof! Play stopped and after her shock of seeing me hurt, she got a band-aid for me. She wouldn't put it on me or even give it to me, but the seed had been planted! Smile.
This isn't a great pic, but it's of she and I doing nails after her bath! The other is the first time, since day one, she would hold my hand and not pull away! Whoo Hoo! (Oh, she did let me hug her when we put her to bed on day 4.)
I'm so grateful that God has prepared me for this little girl; I can wait for her to turn her love toward me. I remember many, many years that I was hostile to God and He continued to love me with an everlasting love! I'm in it for the long haul! I love, love, love her soo much!!! ( And how could I not, she is soo darned cute!)
I'll try to post again later today; it's a free day! We're still in bed, but will work out, go shopping w/ Denise and see our travel group! Thanks for your continued prayers!

I look forward to reading your updates and am praying for your family each day. God is good all the time and we can trust He will do a work in Sophie's heart in His time.
Blessings,
Wendy Bynion
Gosh I miss you so much; Maggie and I look forward to your updates and we are praying for all FIVE of you. We are praying for many new adventures. We did end up getting on facebook and the pictures Todd posted made us experience a taste of China; thank you for including us on your adventure. And each day the evidences of grace that God is sharing is wonderful news. It was ironic that you are getting comfort in Psalms because Joe Catoe Sunday encouraged the body with Psalm 121 "I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." As I heard the verse I thought of you in China. I hope you are comforted by this reminder. Also in my quiet time I found a verse from Ephesians that you have probably commited to memory but wanted to share Ephesians 3:20 "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine" Remember, HE will meet you more than you can imagine and HE will blow your mind. HE is awesome and HE chose Sophie for the Bentzel family; for Todd, for you, for Ellie and for Shane. And tell Shane I loved how his joy came out in all of his pictures. I loved how he held hands on the facebook pictures with Sophie and her little friend. Love you guys and enjoy your "free day" together. Make memories and enjoy EVERY minute. And I CANNOT wait to see the video of you learning to count in Chinese. Darcie
Thank you Shari. Reading your words -- full of joy, hope and love for your new daughter -- is like feeling a fresh breeze coming through the room. We are continuing to pray daily that God is glorified through you all and that you are bold witnesses for Jesus in China.
I think it was Rebecca who first quoted this verse, "Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." (Gal. 6:9) You have an awesome opportunity to understand the Father's love at a new depth as you love Sophie right now.
Thanks to you, Todd and your children for sharing your amazing journey with us.
You all are doing all the right things, just keep it up!
Just think, by Christmas - Sophie is going to be completely different in her attachments and comfort level with her new family.
You are absolutely correct - what a picture adoption is of how God has poured out his love and grace on us!
Enjoy the miracle! (Even when it has some not so easy parts to it.)
Blessings,
Lynda
This must be really tough right now, Shari. When our friends adopted their 15-month old daughter, she attached to Mom and wouldn't have anything to do with Dad. It did take quite a while, but now you would never know! She adores her Daddy! What a neat idea & how true! - the "God perspective" of it.
Isn't Joy great? I loved her! Get her to sing for you - she has a lovely voice! She won't remember me specifically, but tell her I said hi. We were there in Dec. '04.
Blessings!
Susan J.
YOu are all doing so well!! Oh how I remember the sadness I felt when Maddie fell and I learned that she did not at all expect anyone to care. We had to teach her that a Mama's smooch can and does help much! Look out, because now I need to buy stock in bandaids! She uses them all the time!! It is so clear that God has prepared her little heart for you all. The Lord has placed her into your family and He knows you are just the Mama she needs. How scary it must feel for her to trust you...even a little bit. So many "Mama figures" have disappointed her heart. She is, however, showing sighs of already letting you into her heart! I will keep praying for you all and I thank you for sharing this lovely journey...an amazing view of God's Love for each of us. He coordinated this all....taking you across the world to get your gir!! God Bless!! Heather
Hey everybody! Just wanted to say Hi. Looks like all is going well. It is good to see you all smiling and healthy and happy. Can't wait to see you all again and to meet Sophie. It seems like she'll fit in just fine with her big smile, love of laughter and independence and the fact that she looks like she can be devilish ;-) I'll help her develop that a bit more as she gets settled in. HA (no seriously, i will) Be safe and enjoy the rest of your stay. OH, and don't forget my hunan duck...I really want one of those....or if you can't get that, steal General Taos chicken, he'll never miss it. Besides even if he does, he's not coming to America to get it back...
Shari, thank you so much for taking the time to send pictures and keep us updated. In a small way, it helps us to be able to experience this journey of faith, love and grace with you. It also helps us know how to specifically pray. And please know, even though we have not responded often, we have not ceased to pray. Two scriptures from Hebrews are on my heart to share with you today... Heb 9:13 "... it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace" and Heb. 10:23 "Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful," God will strengthen your heart with patience, gentleness, perseverance,... WHATEVER YOUR NEED MAY BE...He will strengthen you by His grace.
This is a promise from our ever
faithful God!
I have to say it again, your little Sophie is adorable! I was so excited to see her name on the Tapestry lower grammar roster! And I also must say our entire family agrees with Jackie... Sophie and Shane look alike! Ahhh... the kindness of God and a priceless picture indeed!
Emmie says "Hey to Ellie and Shane... can't wait to see you and meet Sophie! Praying for you and missing you." We're realizing today it is just ONE WEEK until you will be home!! WAHOO---can't wait! Your homecoming is going to be amazing and so exciting to all of us who are praying for you and love you dearly! Cindy
